Examinations
Regular dental exams are an important part of preventive health care. During a dental exam, Dr. Tracey Mulhall will identify gum inflammation or bone loss as well as evaluate your risk of developing tooth decay and other oral health issues. Dr. Tracey Mulhall will also check your face, neck, and mouth for abnormalities.
Prior to your first appointment, make a list of all medications, as well as any vitamins or supplements you're taking. Be sure to let Dr. Tracey Mulhall know if you have any allergies to medications or if you've ever had a bad reaction to local anesthetics.
During the examination, talk with Dr. Tracey Mulhall about:
- questions or concerns you have about your oral health
- medications, including vitamins and supplements, you're taking
- health issues that could affect the health of your teeth and gums
- use of tobacco products (that could affect healing)
- time constraints (work and family schedules)
- financial concerns and treatment options
Regular dental exams help protect your oral health and general well-being. A dental exam gives Dr. Tracey Mulhall an opportunity to offer advice on caring for your teeth and to detect any oral health problems early — when they're most treatable.
X-rays aren't typically needed at every dental visit but if required, there are some options available.
- Bitewing. This type of x-ray allows the dentist to see the crowns of the upper and lower teeth. During a bitewing x-ray, you'll bite down on the X-ray film holder while the X-ray images are being taken.
- Periapical. This type of x-ray allows the dentist to see the entire tooth and the surrounding bone.
- Panoramic. This type of x-ray provides an oral pathology screen as well as a broad view of the entire mouth.
Radiation exposure from dental x-rays is low — but talk to Dr. Tracey Mulhall if you're concerned about x-ray exposure, if you are pregnant or if you currently have a high level of occupational radiation exposure.
